I didn't know him. But his story has sat heavily with me over the past few weeks, because I recognised something in it: the feeling, familiar to so many of us, that we would need to be twice as good to be allowed half as much.
I've been thinking about what he carried, and about the scrutiny that people live under — how excellence is the entry fee, not the achievement, and how mediocrity, the ordinary forgivable kind, is never quite available to us.
But mostly I've been holding onto his image of the thread. I made this poster because I'd rather keep the stitch than the unravelling.
